FAQ

About Leatherique

Where are Leatherique products made?

Leatherique products are proudly made in our facility in Columbus, Indiana, USA. Each order placed through our website is mixed, bottled, labeled, and shipped directly by us, ensuring complete control over product quality. We source our production inputs from North America.

Is Leatherique part of a larger corporation?

Leatherique is an independent, family-owned and veteran-owned business, proudly operated with a commitment to quality and tradition.

Has the Leatherique formula changed over the years?

No. The formulations of Rejuvenator Oil and Prestine Clean have remained unchanged since George Pavlisko Sr. developed them in 1962. What works, works.

What is the meaning behind the Leatherique logo?

A closer look at the Leatherique logo reveals the letters G and P, a tribute to George Pavlisko. George Pavlisko Sr. founded Leatherique in 1962, and his son, George Pavlisko Jr., led the company for decades thereafter. The logo honors both men and reflects the legacy of craftsmanship, innovation, and dedication they brought to the brand.

Why should I buy on your website and not at your Amazon store?

The choice is yours, but buying directly from our website better helps put a gallon of fuel in our hooptie, instead of another gallon in you-know-who's mega-yacht.

Products and Compatibility

What's the difference between Rejuvenator Oil and Prestine Clean?

Rejuvenator Oil is a deep-penetrating conditioner that softens and feeds the leather, while lifting out impurities at the same time. Prestine Clean is used afterward to remove the lifted dirt, oils, and residues brought to the surface by the Rejuvenator. Prestine Clean is also an excellent detail spray for use in between rejuvenation cycles.

Are Leatherique products suitable for all leathers?

Leatherique Rejuvenator and Prestine Clean are formulated for finished, smooth leather. They are not suitable for nubuck, suede, or leathers with decorative embossed finishes such as gold leaf or metallic foil. Regardless of leather type, always test in an inconspicuous area before full application.

Can I use Leatherique products on nubuck or suede?

No. Both nubuck and suede are open-grained, unfinished leathers that will absorb product unevenly and can be permanently altered in texture and appearance. If you are unsure whether your leather is nubuck or suede, test in a completely hidden area before proceeding.

Can I use Leatherique products on leather with gold or metallic embossing?

We do not recommend it. Leatherique products can soften and lift decorative finishes, including gold leaf, metallic foils, and similar embossed treatments. The leather itself may benefit, but the decorative elements are at risk. Proceed only if you are prepared to accept that outcome.

Can I use Leatherique on aniline leather?

Yes, but always test in a hidden area first. Aniline leather is more absorbent and will darken temporarily during conditioning, but this typically fades over several days as the product is absorbed.

Can I use Leatherique Rejuvenator and Prestine Clean on vinyl or imitation leather?

Prestine Clean can be used to clean the surface of vinyl and synthetic leathers, but Leatherique Rejuvenator is specifically formulated to penetrate and restore natural leather fibers. It is not effective on materials like leatherette, vinyl, or other faux leathers, which lack the porous structure required for absorption. Most imitation leathers are petroleum-based and do not benefit from the conditioning properties of Rejuvenator.

What is leatherette or vegan leather, and why doesn't it compare to real leather?

Leatherette and vegan leather are synthetic substitutes designed to mimic the appearance of genuine leather, but that's where the similarity ends. Most of these materials are petroleum-based, made from plastics like polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which lack the breathability, durability, and natural aging characteristics of real leather. While often marketed as eco-friendly or ethical alternatives, many vegan leathers are neither biodegradable nor sustainable in the long term. There is also a certain irony in the fact that roughly ninety percent of vegan leather is made from petroleum. Liquid dinosaurs, ethically sourced.

Usage Instructions

How do I use Rejuvenator Oil and Prestine Clean properly?

Begin by vacuuming and removing any loose dirt from your leather surfaces. Apply Rejuvenator Oil generously and allow it to soak in for several hours, ideally up to 24 hours, to deeply condition the leather and draw out embedded impurities. Once the Rejuvenator has had time to work, use Prestine Clean with a clean soft cotton cloth to wipe away the lifted dirt, oils, and residue. Finish by buffing the surface dry for a clean, nourished finish.

How long should I let Rejuvenator Oil sit on the leather?

For best results, allow Rejuvenator Oil to sit on the leather for 12 to 24 hours. During this time, it will become tacky as it penetrates the leather and draws out embedded impurities. This is normal and expected. After the treatment period, use Prestine Clean to remove the remaining Rejuvenator and the impurities it has lifted. Be sure to clean the surface before the Rejuvenator dries completely to avoid residue buildup.

Can I use Rejuvenator and Prestine Clean on perforated leather seats?

Yes, you can. When treating perforated areas, apply Rejuvenator in thinner coats to avoid saturating the underlying foam. The goal is to nourish the leather itself without allowing excess product to seep through the perforations.

I've read about creating a "steam bath" when applying Rejuvenator. Does it need to be hot to work?

While heat isn't strictly required, warmth does enhance the effectiveness of Rejuvenator Oil. Warmer temperatures lower its viscosity, allowing it to spread and penetrate more easily. Heat also helps open the pores of the leather, improving absorption. Rejuvenator will still work in cooler conditions, it just takes longer. If you're short on heat, simply allow more time for the product to do its job.

Will Rejuvenator Oil make the leather sticky or greasy?

If used correctly and cleaned off thoroughly with Prestine Clean, it will not leave a residue. Stickiness usually indicates that the product hasn't been fully absorbed or removed.

How often should I use Leatherique products for maintenance?

If your leather is in good condition, applying Rejuvenator Oil once or twice a year is typically sufficient to keep it nourished and supple. Prestine Clean can be used more frequently for routine cleaning and upkeep, helping to remove surface dirt and oils between conditioning treatments. Prestine Clean also has conditioning elements integrated into it.

How do I store Leatherique products, and what is their shelf life?

Store Leatherique products at room temperature with caps sealed tightly. When properly stored, they can remain effective for several years. Minor separation is normal, simply shake well before use. If you notice clumping or the formation of crystalline structures, it's a sign the product has aged and should be replaced.

Where can I find video instructions?

We have a library of how-to videos on our YouTube channel. Printable directions are also available for Rejuvenator and Prestine Clean.

Leather Dyeing

Can I dye leather a different color?

Yes. Leatherique dyes can be used for both color refreshes and full color changes. Darker colors are more straightforward. Lighter color changes require more thorough preparation and additional coats. See our Leather Dyeing guide for the full process.

What's the difference between a color refresh and a color change?

A color refresh restores a faded or worn version of the leather's existing color. A color change takes the leather to an entirely different color. Both are achievable, but a color change demands more rigorous surface prep and typically requires at least two coats to achieve full, even coverage.

Will leather dye cover cracks and scratches?

No. The dye will not compensate for surface irregularities. This is especially important to keep in mind during wet sanding. Sand with a light touch, as too much pressure will create a fuzzy, suede-like surface that the dye will highlight rather than hide. The surface you leave behind after prep is the surface you will see after dyeing. Take your time and finish smooth.

Do I need to seal leather after dyeing?

No. Unlike many dye systems that require a separate topcoat or sealer, Leatherique dye contains a pigment carrying agent that performs this role. One less step, and one less product to buy.

Can I dye leather that has been previously treated with conditioner or wax?

Previous conditioning treatments are manageable with proper surface prep. Silicone-based treatments are a more significant obstacle and can cause products to bead on the surface. Leatherique Prepping Agent is the key to breaking down silicone residue and anything else that would inhibit dye adhesion. Thorough prep work here is not optional.

Can I dye leather seats in my car?

Yes, automotive leather is one of the most common applications. The process is the same as any leather dyeing project. For custom or OEM color matching, see our Leather Dyeing page.

Can I dye leather furniture?

Yes. Sofas, chairs, and other furniture pieces respond well to Leatherique dyes. Kit size selection will depend on the surface area of your project. Sizing guidance is on the product page.

How do I know which dye kit size I need?

Coverage guidance is listed on each product page. When in doubt, it's better to have more than you need. Dye mixed in the same batch will be consistent in color. A second batch, even from the same formula, can vary slightly.

Troubleshooting

Can Leatherique products restore leather that has become stiff and cardboard-like due to water damage?

Yes. Leatherique Rejuvenator is formulated to deeply penetrate leather fibers and gradually replenish the oils that water exposure strips away. Multiple applications and patience are key. For a full guide, see our Water-Damaged Leather page.

What if my leather is still stiff or not as soft as I'd like after using Rejuvenator and Prestine Clean?

Leather that has dried out over time requires patience. Allow a few weeks to a month between applications and let the Rejuvenator work deeper with each treatment. For more detail on restoring severely dried or neglected leather, see our Water-Damaged Leather page.

What should I avoid when treating water-damaged leather?

Anything that accelerates drying. Heat guns, hair dryers, space heaters, direct sunlight, and fans placed close to the surface will all cause rapid moisture loss that locks fibers into a brittle state. Alcohol-based cleaners, silicone conditioners, and petroleum-based products should also be avoided. Slow, controlled drying at room temperature followed by patient re-lubrication with Rejuvenator is the correct approach. See our Water-Damaged Leather page for the full process.
