Leather Care — Maintaining and Restoring Leather the Right Way
Maintaining Hydration in New Leather and Restoring It When Lost
Leather care is fundamentally about managing hydration over time.
Leather loses flexibility as internal lubrication migrates out of the fiber structure due to age, heat, air movement, and use. This loss occurs internally, even when the surface appears intact. Effective care addresses both preserving hydration in new leather and restoring it in leather that has begun to dry out.
New Leather - Preserving Hydration From the Start
New automotive leather is not immune to dehydration. While it may feel supple initially, modern leathers are finished, pigmented, and protected for appearance and durability rather than long‑term internal lubrication.
Early maintenance helps:
- slow the initial loss of internal oils
- reduce long‑term stiffness
- extend the interval before restorative conditioning is needed
When used on new or lightly used leather, conditioning is preventative rather than corrective. The goal is not to "soften" new leather, but to maintain internal balance as it naturally changes with time and exposure.
Restoring Leather That Has Dried Out
As leather ages, flexibility is lost internally as lubrication diminishes. At this stage, surface cleaning alone is ineffective. Restoring suppleness requires rehydrating the leather structure itself.
During rehydration, leather can temporarily feel stiffer, uneven, or slightly tacky. This is a normal part of the process. As conditioning oils migrate into dry fibers, redistribution occurs before flexibility returns. Softer, more elastic leather follows after this process completes.
As leather rehydrates and fiber mobility returns, contaminants that were previously locked into the hardened structure become mobile. These residues migrate toward the surface along with conditioning oils and are removed during the subsequent cleaning step.
Time and warmth play an important role, particularly with heavily dried leather. Warmth lowers the viscosity of Rejuvenator, allowing it to migrate more readily into and through the leather structure, where internal lubrication can redistribute evenly to restore and maintain flexibility. For leather that has been damaged by water or has dried to a rigid, cardboard-like state, see our detailed guide on water-damaged and cardboard-hard leather restoration.
Maintenance After Restoration
Once leather has been properly rehydrated and flexibility restored, the focus shifts back to preservation. Periodic conditioning slows the normal loss of internal lubrication and helps prevent the return of stiffness and brittleness.
Properly maintained leather:
- requires less frequent intervention
- responds more quickly to conditioning
- remains comfortable and resilient longer
Leatherique Rejuvenator & Prestine Clean
Leatherique Rejuvenator and Leatherique Prestine Clean are our signature products. Our formula has remained unchanged since 1962.
Leatherique Rejuvenator is designed to migrate gradually into the leather structure, replenishing internal lubrication over time. It contains no silicones, waxes, or petroleum fillers. Prestine Clean is used after conditioning to remove residues and contaminants released during the process.
Both products are all natural, containing no synthetic additives.
The Leather Care Process
Whether maintaining new leather or restoring dried leather, the process is straightforward and time‑dependent.
Rejuvenating your car interior or any item made with fine quality leather is an easy process:
- Vacuum the leather of excess dirt and debris.
- Apply Rejuvenator liberally to the leather surface.
- Allow it to soak in for 24 hours or longer, depending upon the condition and environment.
- Apply Prestine Clean to a soft cloth and wipe the leather clean.
- Buff the leather with a soft cloth.
Heavily dried leather may benefit from multiple conditioning cycles. New or well‑maintained leather typically requires only periodic application.
